Abstract/Contents: | South facing slopes are frequently associated with extreme environmental conditions for growing turfgrass and amenity landscape plants. The uptake and retention of water is a particular problem on south-facing slopes because of high temperatures and the hydrophobic nature of the surface soils. the present study was undertaken to determine the possible benefits of the use of three soil wetting agents on a south-facing landscape slope. The soil wetting agents Hydraflo(tm) 15G and Hydraflo(tm) 99E (Sierra Chemical Co., Milpitas, CA) and a liquid wetting agent, Wetter Roots(tm) (Diversified Chemical Co., Bedford, TX) were applied to a hybrid(Tifgreen) bermudagrass residential turf landscape with a southern facing slope orientation. Assessments of phytotoxicity, the visible quality of the treated turf, and the uptake of water on treatment plots were made during the months of July and August. The highest visual quality ratings on three observaion dates were recorded for the Hydraflo 15G 4 lb rate treatment. Results with Hydraflo 99E liquid, following two or more applications at 14 day intervals, were better than visual rankings with the Wetter Roots 38E product. The poorest visual ratings were consistently given to the not treated control plots. |
