Abstract/Contents:In an effort to document TSW feeding behavior on bentgrass, and determine if host plant resistance is present in these grasses as well, an experiment was established to evaluate 20 genotypes of bentgrass, the 1989 NTEP bentgrass trial plus selected experimentals, for potential resistance. Three TSW neonate larvae were randomly selected and placed in each of five dishes containing a bentgrass sample. An additional sample of Meyer zoysiagrass, which is very susceptible to the TSW, was prepared for comparison purposes. Larval weights were taken 11 days after introduction. Survival and days to adult emergence were recorded for each larvae. Larval development was slowest on Penncross and exhibited the least weight gain among the 20 bentgrass genotypes. Carmen exhibited the fastest larval gain but the poorest survival to adult emergence. Only a mean of 20.3 days was required from neonate larvae to adult emergence among the 20 bentgrass genotypes. In the previous study development on some zoysiagrasses required 31 to 40 days. This study shows the potential for damage to bentgrasses by the TSW.
