Abstract/Contents: | "In the course of the construction of the N5 motorway in Switzerland an area of artificial soil, made from crushed calcareous rock, was created as an experimental operation...intended to show whether topsoil can be replaced by a mixture of sewage sludge composts and the calcareous material. ... In order to determine the best composition of the mixture, and the part played by every component in soil formation, layers 15, 30, and 45 cm thick were put down with compost proportions ranging from 0-75 per cent, with and without the addition of marl. These various substrates were laid out as trial plots of 1 m2 each, and also tested in lysimeters to establish the quality and quantity of the water percolating through them. All plots were sown with a grass seeds mixture, and received fertilizer in the first year. Various different maintenance programs were carried out from the second year onwards. Plant production is being measured regularly, the development of the soil studied by means of biological, physical and chemical analyses and by physical measurements in the field. The lysimeter data showed an annual loss of heavy metals in the percolation water of less than 0.1 per cent of the total content of the soil. The surplus nitrate in the mixtures with high proportions of compost declined largely after the first year so that in the third year values of less than 0.1 mg per 100g soil or less than 0.1 mg per litre of percolation water were obtained." The test is planned for a five year duration. In addition to the above results in the root zone, organic-mineral aggregates have formed that have led to an increase in the soil cohesion, and to the probability of a well rooted green surface. |
