Abstract/Contents: | "The objective of this research is to investigate the effectiveness of phenotypic recurrent selection for seed size in two synthetic buffalograss populations as a means of improving seedling vigor...One hundred and forty-four seedlings for the large, unselected, and small seeded populations of each synthetic were established in containers in the greenhouse on January 26, 1994. The grass plants were transplanted in the field in isolated crossing blocks at the John Seaton Anderson Turfgrass Facility near Mead, NE on May 18, 1994...Low heritablity estimates and gains from selection indicate that multiple cycles of selection will be necessary to improve this trait...Caryopsis weight might be thought to be negatively corralated with number of caryopses per bur, however no significant correlation existed. Bur weight was positively correlated with the number of caryopses per bur, r=0.68, indicating that bur weight could be used for selection for higher seed set or caryopsis yield. Spread measurements and percent cover ratings were significantly correlated which was to be expected. Both of these measurements were good indicators of turf quality, and bur yield. In the seedling year a larger plant would intuitively have the potential for higher bur yield. Correlations for rate of spread or cover in the seedling year need to be performed for bur yield in subsequent years since buffalograss is a perennial grass." |
