Abstract/Contents: | "Weed competition is a key constraint to restoring native grasslands and establishing wildflowers. Native forbs and wildflowers are a critical component of grassland restoration, and are popular due to their ornamental and low-maintenance characteristics. Identifying herbicides that enhance the establishment of native forbs and wildflowers would facilitate their use in grassland restoration and ornamental plantings. This study was conducted to determine whether certain imidazolinone herbicides improve the establishment of selected forbs. The effect of preemergence applications of imazethapyr, imazameth, and imaquin, applied at 0.07 kg ai/h on the establishment of crown vetch, Illinois bundleflower, black-eyed Susan, upright prairie coneflower, purple prairieclover, gayfeather, roundhead lespedeza, leadplant, Canada tickclover, partridge pea, purple coneflower, and blanket flower were investigated. Experiments were initiated in 1994 and 1995 near Mead, NE. In 1994, one month after planting (MAP), emergence of Illinois bundleflower, black-eyed Susan, crown vetch and purple praireclover was greater when treated with imazethapyr or imazameth compared to non-treated plots 14 MAP. In 1995, emergence of crown vetch, Illinois bundleflower, leadplant, partridge pea, roundhead lespedeza, and Canada tickclover was greatest when treated with imazethapyr. These results indicate that imidazolinone herbicides can facilitate establishment of several wildflower species." |
