Abstract/Contents: | "Eight cultivars of turfgrasses were tested for the effects of alkalifying and acidifying fertilizers on thatch accumulation and some other characters under Alpine conditions at Rinn. Alkaline fertilizer, by changing the pH from 5.2 to 6.0, caused more weeds, less aggression by Festuca rubra and Agrostis tenuis, less thatch accumulation, more roots and more worms, than acid fertilizer, which reduced the pH from 5.2 to 4.0. Poa pratensis and Phleum pratense are favored by alkaline fertilizing, and Festuca rubra and Agrostis by acid fertilizing. Phleum nodosum and Cynosurus tend to be unaffected. The "other grasses" consisted almost entirely of Festuca rubra and Agrostis, thereby being characteristic of the local regional conditions. In contrast to drier regions the thatch accumulation in the first years is quite slight; this is shown very clearly by the results of the same test series carried out at the dry location at Gießen. With the passage of time, however, thatch accumulation - after having reached a certain thickness - increases more rapidly in wetter locations as well. Root development generally occurs inversely to thatch accumulation Phleum pratense and Phleum nodosum showed the least thatch accumulation under both alkaline and acid fertilizing, and Festuca rubra the most. Differences between cultivars were as marked as those between species. The type of fertilizer has only a slight influence, if any, on height of growth and greenness. In spring, alkaline fertilizer gives more rapid greening-up, whereas acid fertilizer gives a somewhat better color over the growth season as a whole." |
