Abstract/Contents: | "In spring 1977 16 grasses were sown on two soils with different degrees of compaction, and then managed under a low maintenance regime. In autumn 1977 the plants were assessed for their height and the distribution and mechanical properties of the roots, after one growth season. Heights were less on the more compacted soil. Low-growing grasses showed a better ability to adapt than the tall-growing one such as Bromus inermis Hds., Bromus erectus Hds., Dactylis glomerata NFG and Baraula, and Festuca arundinancea Ludion. In the compacted soil the root growth, especially of the fine-leaved fescue species, was very matted and concentrated in the 0-2 cm zone. Height is less in relation to root mass on compacted soil. The tensile strength of the roots increases with diameter. In most grasses the "specific root tensile strength" decreases under compacted soil conditions, with the exception of Dactylis glomerata NFG, Bromus inermis Hds., and Festuca arundinacea Ludion. Rhizomes, on account of their larger diameter are very strong, but their "specific rhizome tensile strength" is relatively slight. The "total soil-binding capacity" is less on compacted soil. Moreover, there are considerable differences between grasses. Those with a good soil-binding capacity are Lolium perenne Loretta and Barenza, Poa pratensis Parade, Festuca rubra Topie, and Dactylis glomerata NFG and Baraula. A suitable combination for good anchorage, in terms of rhizome development, low height in relation to root weight and good soil-binding capacity, was shown in the conditions of this trial by Festuca rubra, Poa pratensis and the non-rhizomatous Lolium perenne." |
