A reduction in the time spent looking after plantations as well as an improvement in plant growth development must be taken into account in the effort to find more economical maintenance methods. With this aim, a four year trial under field conditions was set up to find out what effect "mowing out", "mulching" and "hoeing" had had on the amount of care required and the growth of eight species at planting distances ranging from 0.5-2.0 m₂. In the second growing season there was a considerable reduction in the amount of care required independent of the maintenance method. A comparison of the different methods shows that "mulching" leads to a lower care requirement that "hoeing" and to the greatest average plant height. "Mowing out" had a 15% lower care requirement than "mulching" but there was a 27% reduction in plant height. The mulched plants were first to produce a closed plant cover. The use of grass clippings as a mulch had to be often repeated. A more stable and at the same time economical material should lead to a further reduction in the maintenance requirements."
