Abstract/Contents:"The rationalization of land units in the traditional wine-growing areas of Germany to allow better use of machinery has increasingly led to the construction of large terraces with high steep banks, on which it is difficult to establish plant cover. The work reported here was prompted by observing inadequate plant establishment on south-facing loess banks of newly-constructed terraces on the Kaiserstuhl near Freiburg. A small-scale field experiment was carried out to discover which grasses were suitable for covering and stabilizing these banks. The principal criterion was therefore the increase of phytomass during the initial stages of growth. The species and cultivars under investigation were Agropyron repens, Lolium perenne cv. Odstein, Bromus intermis, Festuca rubra commutata cv. Barfalla, Poa compressa and Cynodon dactylon. The critical dry conditions at establishment were best tolerated by Bromus Inermis, followed by Agropyron repens and Cynodon dactylon."
