Abstract/Contents: | "Chloride salts have been used in winter road maintenance for about three decades to prevent the formation of ice and the packing of snow or indeed to remove ice and snow. Application is made as single, mixed or prewetted salts, in the form of highly concentrated salt solutions or as anti-ice pavement. A literature survey is given which shows the effect of de-icing salts on woody vegetation. Numerous papers have been published on the effect of NaCl on vegetation, but only little information is available on CaCl₂ and even less on MgCl₂. Comparisons of NaCl and CaCl₂ with regard to their effect on woody plants indicate that both salts have similar phytotoxicity provided the same quantity is applied. In some investigations damage to the plants could be reduced by partially or completely substituting CaCl₂ for NaCl. The more favourable effect of CaCl₂ on woody plants becomes particularly manifest in the lower application range. Very little research data are available on the effect on MgCl₂ on woody plants. Direct comparisons with NaCl are not known. Studies on motorways in East-Germany have demonstrated that the use of MgCl₂-containing solutions in winter maintenance may well lead to growth reductions of the woody vegetation on the roadside verges. It is true that the excessive use of de-icing agents may cause damage to the plants. But salt application carried out in accordance with weather conditions as well as a controlled spreadig program are able to reduce the possible negative effects to a minimum." |
