Abstract/Contents:"West Haven High School, in West Haven, CT has repaired and it's stadium, built in 1966, with synthetic turf. Built next to a river, which discharges into Long Island Sound not far away, the field had had uneven settlement for years, and in some areas, grass was unable to grow because of uneven areas. Studies were done on the site, and synthetic turf proved to be the most logical solution, since the field needed to be used for more than one sport or game per week. Synthetic turf was introduced 30 years ago, and recently has developed into more a "state of the art" option. Further studies were done on whether synthetic turf would result in more, or fewer injuries. The results were that there were no fewer injuries on real turf than there were on synthetic. The synthetic turf fields require maintenance, but the time needed for maintenance on synthetic turf is about ^D16 of the time needed to mow a sports field. West Haven High School has reduced it's maintenance of the field by 80 or 90% since the installation of synthetic turf, and is pleased with the results.
