Resistance to larvae of the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith), has been found in several grasses, including bermudagrass (Cynodon spp.), centipedegrass [Eremochola ophiuroides (Munro) Hack.], and zoysiagrass (Zoysia spp.). Eighty-one Paspalum spp. were investigated for resistance to larvae of the fall armyworm. Very high levels of antiobiosis were discovered in 'PI 404468' (Paspalum modestum ) and 'PI 442872' (paspalum scrobiculatum ). Fall armyworm larvae that were fed P. modestum ('PI 404468') or P. scrobiculatum ('PI 442872') were significantly smaller at 9 d (16 amd 13 mg, respectively) than larvae that were fed other species of Paspalum , and larvae reared on diet containing these two grass genotypes failed to develop to pupation."
