Abstract/Contents: | Field experiments over 6 yr at Hunua, N. Canterbury compared a range of grass and legume cv. for sunny aspects of dry hill country. The most suitable legumes were subterranean clover cv. Woogenellup and lucerne cv. College Glutinosa. White, red and alsike clovers, Lotus corniculatus and L. pedunculatus (=L. uliginosus) did not survive summer droughts, while Trifolium ambiguum was low producing. Of the grasses, cocksfoot cv. Grasslands K1950 showed promise, being drought resistant, cool season active and easily established from oversowing. Perennial ryegrass, cocksfoot cv. Grasslands Apanui and tall fescue cv. Grasslands 4710 did not tolerate severe droughts. Recommendations are given for establishment and management of the most promising spp. for this environment. |
