Author(s):da Gama, M. V.
Author Affiliation:Estacao Agronomica Nacional, P-2780 Oeiras, Portugal
Title:Absorcao e libertacao de magnesio nalguns solos do perimetro de rega do Alto Sado
Translated Title:Uptake and release of magnesium in some soils of the Alto Sado irrigation area, Portugal
Source:Agronomia Lusitana. Vol. 841, No. 1, 1981, p. 25-51.
Keywords:TIC Keywords: Magnesium
Abstract/Contents:Surface (0-20 cm) and subsurface (20-40 cm) samples of twelve soils of the Par, Atl and A families were cropped in pots with Lolium multiflorum for approx. 15 weeks. Soils were subsequently incubated for three months or submitted to four wetting and drying cycles. Contents of exchangeable Mg and Mg extractable with HCl, HNO3 or cation exchange resin were markedly higher in A soils than in Par or Atl soils, and Mg uptake by ryegrass was greater in the A soils. The amount of non-exchangeable Mg released during cropping, calculated as the difference between Mg uptake by plants and the reduction in exchangeable Mg in the soil during cropping, ranged from 0.3 to 1.2 mg/100 g in Par soils, from 0.4 to 0.9 mg/100 g in Atl soils, and from 0.3 to 1.5 mg/100 g in A soils. Incubation and wetting and drying cycles caused increases in exchangeable Mg contents in some soils. Mg uptake was closely correlated with exchangeable- and resin-Mg in Par and Atl soils, and with HNO3- and HCl-Mg in Par soils.
