Abstract/Contents: | Nonstructural carbohydrate content (NCC) in leaf blade and stem was measured in 17 diploid varieties at seven-day intervals from 30-65 days after emergence. NCC in stem dry matter ranged from 35 to 47%, according to variety, 65 days after emergence. The observed intervarietal differences were chiefly attributable to differences in fructosan content. Compared with late varieties, early ones generally showed lower NCC, fructosan contents and degree of polymerization of fructosan. NCC was positively correlated with specific leaf weight and with shoot weight. |
