Abstract/Contents: | In 1970, 5 cm thick rootzone layers of soil, sand, sand + peat, sand + Hygromull, sand + peat + Hygromull, sand + 300 g/m3 Agrosil or sand + peat + Hygromull + 200 g/m3 Agrosil were laid on a natural soil with a high proportion of fine particles. Seeds (Poa pratensis (70%), Cynosurus cristatus (20%) and Phleum pratense (10%)) were sown and the sward was cut regularly and given 20 g/m2 N annually for some years. In 1980 and 1981 the grass was allowed to grow tall and yields were measured. Yields from the sand and soil layers were poor and the highest yield was from sand + peat + Hygromull, sand + Agrosil and sand + peat + Hygromull + Agrosil. The N content of the grass was increased by Hygromull. Results are discussed in relation to thatch production and organic matter in the root-zones. |
