Abstract/Contents: | The advantages and disadvantages of (a) laboratory, (b) glasshouse and growth chamber and (c) field plot methods for cultivar identification and purity determination are briefly discussed. 4 papers are reviewed; one on varietal identification in wheat suggests that the effectiveness of the phenol test could be increased by the use of specific concentrations of substrates, stimulators and inhibitors to separate cultivars showing the same color reaction. This theory was supported by evidence from experiments with 2 hexaploid and 2 tetraploid cultivars. 3 papers on varietal identification of Poa pratensis seed are noticed separately in the following abstracts. |
