Abstract/Contents: | Average 1000-grain weight differed between P. pratensis cultivars but showed too great variability for use in identification. Specific weight was an important factor in mechanical analysis for impurities, and the size and shape of the fruits and particularly of the glumes, the degree of maturity and seed moisture content could be major factors affecting which florets were carried into the lighter fraction during seed blowing. Investigations showed that because of the introduction of new cultivars, the blowing procedure did not always give the same results as hand sorting and each cultivar needed testing to determine whether or not purity analyses should be carried out by hand, as for cv. Merion. Both the light and heavy fractions needed testing for the presence of other Poa spp. |
