Abstract/Contents: | A behavioral assay was used in New York to determine the maximum range over which visual cues attract adults of Hypera postica (Gylh.) to lucerne, their principal food-plant. The range proved to depend on the amount of lucerne used, but in general the response of an adult did not decline significantly until the lucerne subtended an angle less than 120 deg in its visual field. The visual response was also shown to be only moderately plant specific; weevils could distinguish lucerne from periwinkle and Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (taxifolia)) but could not discriminate between lucerne and red clover (Trifolium pratense), oats, bluegrass (Poa pratensis), or beans (Phaseolus vulgaris). |
