Abstract/Contents: | Percentage germination of fresh seed produced by 50 Poa annua plants collected from 18 sites at 0-305 m alt. in NE Scotland tested at 20 deg C was in the range 0-100% and of 12 samples of Alopecurus myosuroides seed obtained from 5 sites in England tested at 18 deg ranged from 8 to 44%. When tested at various temp. in the range 2-30 deg or alternating for 16 and 8 h at 15/20 or 20/30 deg , germination of seed of 1 of 2 P. annua populations was high (92%) at 15 deg , very low at extreme temp. and high with alternating temp., whereas that of the other population was very low at all constant temp., but 100 and 95% at the 2 alternating temp., respectively. Populations varied markedly in responses to other tests involving temp. pretreatments, different photoperiods, light or dark, a range of temp. and combinations of these treatments, except that germination was always high with alternating temp. in light. A. myosuroides seed was given fewer treatments, but differences between populations also occurred. Results are discussed in relation to site of population, germination behaviour in the field and germination testing. |
