Abstract/Contents: | Presents some of the results of the Willamette River Basin USGS Pesticide Study in Oregon. Results discussed include: the study identified 36 of the 86 pesticides tested for in the various tributaries flowing into the Willamette, the five most frequently detected compounds were herbicides (atrazine, desethylatrazine, simazine, metolachior, and diuron), and the only pesticide to exceed state or Environmental Protection Agency concentration standards was chlorpyrifos. Discusses the recent new hiring and staff actions taken by the Oregon Environmental Council towards elevating pesticide issues. Also discusses the work conducted by the non-profit ONE/Northwest company, which focuses on providing needed technical assistance to the region's conservation community in Oregon. One of the first grants provided by ONE/Northwest was to establish the Oregon Conservation Network, which is a communications entity that allows approximately 70 conservation groups to pool their resources and share ideas. |
