Abstract/Contents: | Significant differences in HCN potential (HCN-p) in meristematic stem tips were obtained among 9 Cynodon selection over a 2-yr period. The HCN-p conc. basically followed either high or low levels. High-level HCN-p grasses averaged 407 and 529 p.p.m. on a fresh-wt basis during summer and autumn, resp., low-HCN-p grasses averaged 121 and 131 p.p.m. Av. HCN-p conc. were lowest for C. dactylon var. aridus (75 p.p.m.) and highest for C. nlemfuensis var. nlemfuensis (506 p.p.m.). HCN-p content decreased with maturity during summer, but during autumn it remained high until temp. fell below freezing. After frost HCN-p decreased from 92 to 43 p.p.m. and 78 to 25 p.p.m. in high- and low-level grasses, resp. Meristematic tips dried to 85% DM decreased in HCN-p by 88% and 78% for high- and low-level grasses, when compared with fresh samples. Significant correlations were found between HCN-p and total solar radiation. Separating C. nlemfuensis and C. aethiopicus into plant parts showed similar DM levels in both grasses, but HCN-p in C. aethiopicus was consistently lower than that in C. nlemfuensis. The meristematic tips generally had the highest HCN-p regardless of spp. The data indicated differences in HCN-p between Cynodon entries that could be beneficial when managing tropical grasses. |
