Abstract/Contents: | During research of masked chafers on golf courses, adult male beetles were observed to be sexually attracted to some late-developing grubs. To investigate this, metal Japanese beetle traps were baited with either male or female grubs or grub extracts, or adult virgin female beetles. Although males were attracted to the adult females as expected, they were also highly attracted to the grubs. This suggests that sex pheromones are present in the larval stage of both sexes, and are "lost" in the adult male. This means that grubs could possibly be used to identify the sex pheromone. |
