Abstract/Contents: | Cynodon turf cultivars are often grown in warm environments with high evapotranspiration rates that cause plant stress and negatively influence plant appearance and health. Cultural practices that improve turfgrass tolerance to moisture stress could enhance plant performance and survival following drought. The objective of this study was to determine leaf water potential (LWP) of two Cynodon cultivars in response to potassium (K) fertilisation and declining soil moisture levels. Water-relation characteristics and LWP were measured on Cynodon cultivars Tifdwarf and Tifway, fertilised at 0, 49, and 98 kg K ha₋₁ in a field and in a glasshouse study. Tifdwarf had higher (less negative) LWP than Tifway in both field and glasshouse studies along with more rapid recovery following water stress periods. Application of K reduced leaf firing damage (LFD). Visual ratings indicated that plants that received 49 or 98 kg K ha₁₁ were able to recover from drought stress more quickly than plants not receiving K." |
