| Abstract/Contents: | "Buffalograss (Buchloe dactyloides) is native to the short and mixed grass prairies of the North American Great Plains. As has been observed of many other prairie plants, buffalograss has good drought tolerance. Broad based genetic diversity along with its short stature and spreading growth habit, has targeted this species for development of new drought tolerant turf varieties. Work towards this goal has progressed in the last 10 years, as indicated by the recent releases of a few turf type varieties, such as Prairie, Bison, 609, and Buffalawn. In 1991 the National Turfgrass Evaluation Program (NTEP) established the first national trial of turf-type buffalograsses. The objective of the trial was to evaluate relative establishment rates and turf perormance of these buffalograss entries at selected sites around the United States, including TAES-Dallas in North Central Texas. The focus at TAES-Dallas is on the rate of establishment, fall color retention, spring greenup, and overall turf quality." |
