Abstract/Contents: | "Plant resistance to insects is an effective but underutilized means of controlling turfgrass pests. Development of insect resistant turfgrass cultivars has been widely neglected compared to the emphasis on aesthetic traits. Despite the superior cost effectiveness of host plant resistance as a means of pest management in turf, the turfgrass industry has relied almost exclusively on pesticides for control of insect and mite pests in turfgrass. Resistant cultivars, however, have been used successfully as a means of insect control. 'Floratam' and 'Floralawn' St. Augustinegrass Stenotaphrum secundatum (Walt) Kuntze, cultivars were released for their resistance to the southern chinch bug, Blissus insularis Barber. The potential for host resistance to insects and mites in turfgrass has been reviewed by Reinert (1982) and Quisenberry (1990). Expanded efforts are needed to develop pest resistant turfgrass cultivars to meet the environmental quality and safety requirements of the future." |
