Abstract/Contents: | "Grubs of the black turfgrass ataenius (BTA) were controlled equally well by Othene TTO at either the 1.5 ounce or 1.9 oz/1000 sq ft rate, as well as by Dylox 80 (6 oz/1000 sq ft) and Orthene (1.5 oz/1000 sq ft) plus Tame (0.37 oz/1000 sq ft). All treaments showed significant reductions in grub populations vs. the untreated check, and no phytotoxicity was observed. There were no significant differences among insecticide treatments. There was a slight trend (non-significant) indicating that addition of Tame to Orthene may slightly decrease the efficacy of Orthene, an observation that was made in masked chafer trials as well. Based on the data obtained, Orthene, when applied alone at rates of either 1.5 oz or 1.9 oz/1000 sq ft was as effective as the industry standard, Dylox 80, for control of BTA grubs. Addition of other insecticides, such as Tame, is probably unnecessary, given the excellent control observed with Orthene alone. With BTA grub infestations sometimes causing problems for as long as five months (June through October), Orthene can be an important component in grub management programs. In rotation with products such as imidaclprid (Merit), the use of Orthene will prevent development of resistance to imidacloprid. In addition, because the residual activity of imidacloprid is 6-10 weeks in most regions of California, Orthene will have an important role in extending the time period during which effective ataenius grub control can be achieved." |
