| Abstract/Contents: | "The use of vehicle-mounted optical sensors to assess plant status may play an integral part in the future of turfgrass management. Varying pigment concentrations affect the amount of reflectance obtained from plant canopies and affect sensor-based measurements. The objectives of this study were to determine the influence of chlorophylls, xanthophylls, and [beta] carotene on turfgrass reflectance at 671 and 780 nm, and to develop an improved protocol for HPLC analysis of turfgrass pigments. A consistent extraction procedure and HPLC protocol were developed to separate turfgrass leaf pigments. Data from optical sensors were statistically compared to leaf pigment concentrations determined by HPLC. Chlorophylls, xanthophylls, and [beta] carotene variably influenced sensor perception." |
