| Abstract/Contents: | "Seashore zoysiagrass (Z. sinica Hance) is an obscure species that has previously been considered non-adapted to turf use. During a collecting trip to Southeastern China in June 1992 several Z. sinica samples were collected. The Z. sinica's collected had promising turf attributes and were similar to Z. japonica but with larger seeds. The seed length of the Z. sinica averages 5.3 mm compared to 3.1 mm for improved Z. japonica. The Z. sinica samples were found along the seashore rather than the hills where Z. japonica is predominately adapted. We started a Z. sinica breeding program in 1992 to make improvements in turf quality, seed yield and dollar spot resistance. 'J-14,' the first variety to be developed, was entered in the 1996 Zoysiagrass National Turfgrass Evaluation Program trial, where it rated comparable to 'Meyer.' J-14 should perform well in areas where Z.japonica is adapted, under low to moderate maintenance. J-14 will be commercially released in 2001." |
