Abstract/Contents: | "Cultivar selection is a critical step in turfgrass management programs. Currently selection for N use efficient cultivars has relied upon performance based data obtained from the National Turfgrass Evaluation Program (NTEP). The objective of this study was to provide a metabolic basis for this selection, focusing on the reduction of nitrate to nirtite since this step has been determined to be rate limiting in turfgrass N assimilation. For this study, turf cultures were grown in a N-free Hoagland's nutrient solution supplemented with 1mM NaNO(@3)(^-). The Nitrate Reductase activity (NRA) in 9 Creeping bentgrass (Agrostris palustris) and 9 Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perrene) cultivars was compared using a modified in vivo assay. Significant differences in NRA were found among cultivars of both species and these data will be utilized to ascertain if a relationship exits between our metabolic data and those of NTEP evaluations." |
