| Abstract/Contents: | "The methods most often used to record disease severity in a study area are visual estimation of severity, and counts of disease foci. These methods can bias the results of studies using them for assessing disease severity. Visual estimation is often biased at the extreme ends of a scale while disease foci counts bias results due to difficulty in accurately determining foci once diseased areas coalesce. These problems result in under- and overestimates of actual disease pressure. Other problems common to both methods are bias introduced by different people rating a study and the problems that develop when comparing data from different locations/rates. Analyzing high resolution, scanned images can improve the accuracy and repeatability of disease assessment. Data was collected using traditional rating techniques and compared to analyzed images from the same area." |
