Abstract/Contents:"Brown patch caused by Rhizoctonia solani is a recurring problem on perennial ryegrass golf course fairways in the Midwest. In this test, ryegrass maintained under fairway conditions was watered daily or three days weekly; poled daily to remove dew, or not poled; and fertilized with N at 98 to 396 kg ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹. Irrigation frequency did not affect visible brown patch injury, but less browning was present in daily irrigated turf when evaluated using quantified colorific images. Poling reduced brown patch injury by up to 10%. Brown patch increased with increasing N level. An analogous growth chamber test demonstrated that hourly watering during an 18-hour infection period reduced number of infected leaves by 80% compared to nonirrigated turf. Frequent irrigation seems to suppress brown patch by influencing dew accumulation and/or disturbing fungal mycelium during the infection process."
