Title:Relationship between photosynthetic rate of leaves and specific leaf area (SLA) in timothy plants (Phleum pratense L.)

Abstract/Contents:50 plants from timothy cv. (a) Clair, (b) Senpoku, (c) Climax, (d) Heidemij and (e) S51 showed a negative correlation between photosynthetic rate and SLA throughout the growing season, particularly at heading. High photosynthetic rate and low SLA were found in (c), whereas (e) had a low photosynthetic rate and high SLA. In a 2nd experiment, 32 plants from (a), (b), (c) and (e) were grown under 18-h daylength during Aug.-Sept. when air temp. was 16 deg C. These plants showed higher photosynthesis rates than those grown under natural daylength of 14 h. During the cooler season of Oct.-Nov. when air temp. was 9.6 deg , photosynthetic rates were lower in plants grown under long days. SLA tended to increase under long days at both temp.
