Abstract/Contents: | The M1 effects of gamma and neutron irradiation and of treatment with ethyl methanesulphonate (EMS) on diploid Phleum pratense ssp. nodosum (2n = 14) and hexaploid P. pratense ssp. pratense (2n = 42) were studied. As expected, the hexaploid varieties were more radioresistant, with regard to germination and growth, than the diploid. Some evidence was found for a similar difference in response to EMS treatment. The efficiency of neutrons was around 5-10 times that of gamma radiation. In an investigation of three alternative modes of fertilization for obtaining M2 mutants, self pollination by isolation of spikes in paper bags was found to give too low a seed set. Open pollination gave a high seed set but a mutation frequency significantly lower than pair crossing of one M1 plant with one control plant followed by sib crossing of the progeny. For the hexaploid, this last method gave mutation rates eight times higher than those of the spontaneous control. |
