Abstract/Contents: | "Host resistance to insect pests is an economical and environmentally sound strategy for pest management in turfgrasses. The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is a primary pest of most turfgrass species grown across the United States. A high level of insect resistance to fall armyworm was identified as antibiosis (expressed as larval mortality, slowed growth or reduced feeding) in 'Baron' and 'Delwood' Kentucky bluegrass Poa pratensis L., Syn 1 and Syn 2 Texas bluegrass, P. arachnifera Torr. and among P. arachnifera x P. pratensis hybrids cultivated during the summer months (June - July 1995) in Texas. Mortality of fall armyworm during their development in no-choice feeding experiments ranged from 6 - 100% depending upon the genotype or the Poa species. 'Laser' rough bluegrass, Poa trivialis L., is a very susceptible host for fall armyworm larvae with development from egg to adult within 37.3 days. On the other resistant grasses, surviving larvae required 47 to 56 days to develop from egg to adult emergence. Results of this study indicate that strong levels of resistance to fall armyworm are present in the Poa species." |
