Abstract/Contents: | 'Penncross' creeping bentgrass callus is being screened in the Host-Pathogen interaction System (HPIS) with Rhizoctonia solani (causal organism of brown patch) to obtain Brown Patch resistant bentgrass. The HPIS is a unique system where in the plant tissue, Penncross, and the pathogen, R. solani, grow simultaneously while avoiding the physical contact that naturally interferes with the development and plantlet regeneration of Penncross callus. These hardened plants are finally transplanted to field plots. At this point, the plants will be evaluated for brown patch resistance at the whole plant level. Greenhouse studies inoculating the selected plants with R. solani will be conducted. Those plants that do not exhibit symptoms of infection are assumed to be resistant to R. solani (brown patch). |
