Abstract/Contents: | "Extensive research has been conducted on timing of herbicide application as it relates to crop and weed competition. However, another timing factor maybe [may be] important; time of day of application. The glufosinate label states that application should be made between dawn and two hours before sunset to avoid the possibility of reduced weed control. There is little to no published data that supports this statement. The objectives of this study were to examine the influence of time of day of herbicide application, adjuvant and rate of glyphosate and glufosinate on annual weed control. Two field experiments were conducted at Rosemount, MN and one at Crookston, MN in 1999. The experimental design was a randomized complete block in 1998 and a completely randomized design in 1999 with four replications and the plot size was 3 M by 9 M. Glyphosate (Roundup Ultra) rates were 0.421 and 0.105 kg ae/ha and glufosinate rates were 0.292 and 0.146 kg ae/ha. Herbicide treatments were applied with and without an adjuvant. The adjuvant was a combination of 20% non-ionic surfactant and 80% ammonium sulfate. All treatments were applied with water at 94 l/ha. Time of day of herbicide applications were 0600, 0900, 1200, 1500, 1800, 3200 and 2400. Seven and 14 day visual ratings and biomass were taken. Timing of herbicide application significantly influenced annual weed control with both glyphosate and glufosinate. The greatest annual weed control was observed at 1500 and 1800 hours while significantly less weed control was observed at 2100 and 2400 hours. The addition of an adjuvant to both glyphosate and glufosinate increased efficacy. However, the addition of an adjuvant did not increase annual weed control at 2100 and 2400 hours. Increasing the herbicide rates increased efficacy but did not over come the time of day effect." |
