Abstract/Contents:"This is the first report of the tawny mole cricket, Scapteriscus vicinus Scudder, for Texas. Populations of this new state pest were first identified in Houston, TX during Aug. 1996 on a golf course setting. Additional samples of S. vicinus were received later in 1996 and during the summer of 1997. Identification of this pest in Houston represents the farthest west migration that has been reported for the species. This pest has been well established in Louisiana for years and has been spreading westward. The tawny mole cricket represents the second Scapteriscus sp. to be intoduced into Texas. The southern mole cricket, S. borellii Giglio-Tos, was identified well over 10 y ago at several locations across the state and now is established over much of the eastern half of Texas. The tawny mole cricket has caused extensive plant damage across much of the southeasternn U.S. since its introduction from South America around 1900. Unlike the southern mole cricket, which feeds primarily on other insects and earthworms, tawny mole cricket feeds almost exclusively on plant material. Past studies have shown that this species will cause extensive damage to the warm season turfgrasses used across the state including: bermudagrass, bahiagrass, centipedegrass, St. Augustinegrass and zoyiagrass."
