Abstract/Contents: | "Linear gradient irrigation system (LGIS) is a facility that allows long term assessment of turf performance under moisture gradient. 'Rebel II' tall fescue, 'Meyer' zoysiagrass, 'Tifway' bermudagrass, 'Prairie' buffalograss and 'Nortam' St. Augustinegrass were sodded under LGIS with a randomized complete block design in 1991. The irrigation gradient ranges from 120% pan evaporation to natural precipitation along a 18-m turf area, beyond which no irrigation water was applied. Evaluation during summer of 1994-1996 indicated that the ranges of minimum irrigation required to maintain acceptable turf quality were 24-49, 20-47, 5-22, 3-18 and 3-11% of Class A pan evoporation (Ep) for Rebel II, Meyer, Nortam, Tifway and Prairie, respectively. Higher brown patch and dollar spot infections were observed at wet regions for Nortam and Tifway, whereas gray leaf spot was only observed at deficit irrigation regions for Nortam. Earlier spring green-up was noted on higher irrigation regime for Tifway and Meyer, on intermediate irrigation regime for Rebel II and Nortam, and on low irrigation regime for Prairie. Weeds invasion was significantly enhanced by high level of irrigation for Prairie, and by low level of irrigation for Meyer." |
