Abstract/Contents: | "Bermudagrass, Cynodon sp. L. Rich., grows throughout the tropical and sub-tropical parts of the world. Most members of this highly variable genus are classified as C. dactylon (L.) Pers. (2n = 18,36), C. transvaalensis Burtt-Davy (2n = 18), or C. plectostachyum (K. Schum.) Pilg. (2n = 18). Intraspecific hybrids between C. dactylon clones from United States and Africa are excellent forage plants such as the Coastal and Suwannee varieties. Some of these are completely sterile but vegetative propagation is practicable, as evidenced by 6 million acres planted to Coastal. Interspecific C. dactylon x C. transvaalensis hybrids (2n = 27), such as Tifgreen and Tifway are completely sterile but make excellent vegetatively propagated turfgrasses. Attempts to hybridize C. plectostachyum with C. dactylon and C. transvaalensis have failed. Self-incompatibility occurs in clones of C. dactylon and C. transvaalensis. High-yielding, seed-propagated F₁ hybrids of C. dactylon can be produced by interplanting two selected self-sterile, cross-fertile clones in seed fields. Methods for breeding better bermudagrasses are discussed." |
