Abstract/Contents: | "Use of cool-season turfgrasses for overseeding dormant warm-season turfs during the winter season is a common practice throughout the South. Timely trials are required for proper evaluation of new cool-season turfgrass cultivars, mixtures, and blends, which are continuously being released by the seed industry. Differences among up to 33 cool-season turfgrasses overseeded on 'Tifway II' and 'Tifdwarf' bermudagrass, Cynodon spp., were noted under fairway and putting green conditions, respectively, throughout the 1992-1993 winter growing season at Gainesville, FL. Overseeded putting green grasses with best seasonal turf quality were 'Alliance', 'CBS', 'Cypress', 'Florida Green', 'Marvelgreen Supreme II', 'Marvelgreen/Laser', 'Medalist Gold', 'Southern Select', 'Sunrise Primo', 'TMI-EXP', 'VIPIIE', and '89-666'. All except Cypress rough bluegrass, Poa trivialis L., were cultivars of perennial ryegrass, Lolium perenne L. Overseeded fairway grasses with best seasonal turf quality scores were Alliance, CBS, 'Club Choice', 'Futura 2000', Marvelgreen Supreme II, Marvelgreen/Laser, Medalist Gold, 'Sonoran', Southern Select, Sunrise Primo, TMI-EXP, VIPIIE, and 89-666. All were cultivars of perennial ryegrass. Seed number per unit weight varied widely between cultivars. All seed purchases and seeding rates should be based on pure live seed content." |
