Abstract/Contents: | "Winter diseases of turfgrass, collectively referred to as snow molds, are a major problem on golf courses and other turf areas in Wisconsin and similar regions. Creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris) is a highly desirable species for these types of turf, but most cultivars are highly susceptible to various snow mold pathogens. Speckled snow mold, caused by Typhula ishikariensis, a facultative parasite, is one of the most severe snow mold diseases in Wisconsin. In 1997 and 1998, we collected over 700 clones of creeping bentgrass from older (25+ years) golf courses throughout Wisconsin. Plants were sampled from fairways that are not treated with snow mold inhibiting fungicides or from putting greens that are treated with such fungicides. We screened 326 of these clones for reaction to an isolate of T. ishikariensis in a replicated experiment during the summer of 1999. Reaction to the fungus was highly repeatable and differed among the clones (P<0.01). Twenty-two of the fairway clones were highly resistant, while only 3% of the putting green clones were highly resistant (P<0.01 for this difference). This suggests that considerable natural selection for resistance has occurred on these fairways, increasing the frequency of resistant plants. Furthermore, snow mold resistant plants are probably present in very low frequency in most bentgrass cultivars." |
