| Abstract/Contents: | "The public perceives managed turf as a threat for nitrate contamination of surface and groundwater. A field study was conducted at two golf course sites to determine soil NO3-N concentrations as a function of landscape position. Suction cup lysimeters were installed in the bermudagrass fairways, roughs, and adjacent non-play areas. Soil solution samples were collected weekly from 30, 60, and 90 cm soil depths. Data indicate that NO3 concentrations fluctuate temporarily and spatially at both sites. Concentrations ranged from 0.2 to 27 mg NL-1. Overseeded fairways had lower concentrations than non-overseeded fairways. The concentration profiles varied with depth at both sites. Lowest NO3 concentrations were found in the very low or no-maintenance non-play areas (<1 mg N L-1). We conclude that overseeding and fertilization affect soil nitrate concentrations in turfgrass systems." |
