Abstract/Contents: | "Cold hardening is critical for turfgrasses to survive overwintering stresses. Our objective was to compare changes during cold hardening in supina bluegrass (Poa supina Schrad.) to Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) and perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). Plants were grown in a hydroponic system at both a control and a cold-hardening temperature regime for four weeks. Photosynthetic efficiency (PE) parameters (Fv, Fm, Fo) were determined using a kinetic chlorophyll fluorescence test, while growth parameters were measured by hand. LT-50 values were determined by the electrolyte leakage method. Supina bluegrass had greater leaf area, leaf number, dry weight, and root mass than the other species. The PE of supina bluegrass was lower than that of the other two species, while the LT-50 value was similar to that of Kentucky bluegrass and greater than that of perennial ryegrass. Supina bluegrass is useful in northern areas because it maintains its shoot and root tissues at cold temperatures, yet still cold-acclimates as well as Kentucky bluegrass." |
