Abstract/Contents: | "Fertilizer recommendations for turfgrasses grown on calcareous sand root-zones are not adequate. We are conducting two experiments to get at these nutritional needs: 1) investigate phosphorous, potassium, and their interactions; 2) investigate nitrogen, potassium, and their interactions. We started two experiments in 1998: one with rates of phosphorus and potassium, the second with rates of nitrogen and potassium[.] Phosphorous treatments of 1.25 through 5.0 lb P2O5/1000 ft2/yr rates gave equal quality. Fertilization rate correlated with soil test phosphorus, tissue test phosphorous and turfgrass quality. Potassium fertilization was more problematic because higher potassium fertilization rates (up to 10 lb K2O/1000 ft2/yr) yielded poorer quality turf. Higher potassium fertilization rates increased soil test potassium, but no effect was observed on tissue test potassium. The effect of nitrogen fertilization was very strong, as expected, having a strong effect on tissue nitrogen and improved quality." |
