| Abstract/Contents: | "As state land-grant universities cope with a rapidly changing client base and reduced funding, multistate cooperation may offer a partial solution for under-staffed Experiment Station and Extension systems. Although organizational structures for regional cooperation have existed for years (eg. Regional Research Projects) it has become difficult to convince researchers to continue Regional Research Projects. This is partly because Regional Research Projects require large proposals, a lengthy review process and limited funds for travel to Regional Projects are available. Additionally, faculty with large Extension appointments may find that Regional Projects do not fit their programs. Other organizational structures for multistate cooperation do exist and are increasing in number, such as Information Exchange Groups (IEGs). Demonstrated regional cooperation has become a requirement of many granting agencies, and a lack of institutional cooperation on proposals often hurts chances for funding. In addition, the U.S. Congress has mandated that at least 25% of Federal Funds must be used for multistate, multidiscipline, or multifunction activities. The objective of this presentation is to discuss current institutional structures that encourage or discourage multistate cooperation, and to examine future opportunities." |
