Title:Recovery of three temperate-climate grasses from drought stress
Source:Annales Agriculturae Fenniae. Vol. 15, No. 4, 1976, p. 309-315.
# of Pages:7
Keywords:TIC Keywords: Dactylis glomerata; Festuca pratensis; Phleum pratense; Stress; Roots; Water stress; Chemical composition; Carbohydrates
Abstract/Contents:"In a pot trial at Riverside, California, USA with (a) cocksfoot, (b) meadow fescue and (c) timothy (all the Finnish cv. Tammisto), different levels of water stress were obtained by discontinuing the watering on 3 dates at weekly intervals. Water stress progressed quickest in (b) and slowest in (c). Drought reduced the wt. of roots relatively more than the wt. of tops but it had no significant effect on tillering. Drought increased the percentage but decreased the absolute amounts of non-structural carbohydrates of roots in proportion to the severeness of drought stress. All plants except one survived water stress under the wilting point for 1-11 days, varying from -22 to -55 bar at the end of drought treatment. Watering was recommenced at cutting. (c) which was overtaken by lower water stress earlier than the other 2 spp. recovered quickest. During the first 2-2.5 wk of the regrowth period the dry wt. of tops and within 4 wk the dry wt. of roots of (c) among different drought treatments equalized. The respective dry wt. of the most stressed (a) and (b) plants still stayed reduced after 4 wk of the regrowth period. Regrowth of tops was more vigorous than that of roots. At the beginning of regrowth the non-structural carbohydrate content of roots decreased rapidly and fell lower in drought-treated than in continuously-watered plants. Within 4-5 wk the content of non-structural carbohydrates was still reduced but their actual amounts in drought-treated plants had reached or surpassed their level at the cutting date. The carbohydrate reserves of roots of continuously-watered plants were still lower than they were at cutting."
