Abstract/Contents: | A study was conducted during 1974, 1975, and 1976 to determine coastal dune profile changes and plant succession at the Hobe Sound Wildlife Refuge in Martin County. Fifty-six sites were studied in detail along a 31/2 mile stretch of coastal dunes. Results indicate that Australian pine, Casuarina equisetifolia L., accelerate the rate of dune erosion when they occur in thick stands that produce dense shade and sufficient plant litter to prevent growth of grasses and other low-growing plants. Results also indicate that beach morning-glory, Ipomoea pescaprae (L.) Sweet, seashore-elder, Iva imbricata Walt., sea oats, Uniola paniculata L., seashore paspalum, Paspalum vaginatum Swartz, and sea purslane, Sesuvium portulacastrum L., are important plants in reducing the rate of dune erosion. These are also the first and most important plants to become established on newly formed coastal dune soils. |
