Abstract/Contents:Profiles experiments at the Weibullsholm Plant Breeding Institute in Landskrona, in southern Sweden, from August 1948 to April 1954. The experiment attempted to determine whether one grass species or a mixture of grass species would "form an ideal lawn." Factors determining which approach was optimal included color, density, and freedom from disease. Five trial results are reported. States that "as a general conclusion from our grass experiments it may be stated that for this country an all-round mixture consisting of 50 per cent Festuca rubra, 30 per cent Poa pratensis and 20 per cent Agrostis tenuis possesses the desired properties for a turf of good quality. Poa trivalis may partly serve as a substitute for Poa pratensis under certain conditions, e. g. in moist soil. A good combination of a more robust (aggressive) grass species and the finer turf-grasses is difficult to obtain. Strictly speaking, one can only point out which species are the most aggressive and thus least appropriate. Lolium perenne, Lolium multiflorum and Festuca pratensis seem to be the worst and should be used with caution. Next come Phleum pratense, Agrostis gigantea and Cynosurus cristatus. Grasses which give good promise as turf-grasses are Phleum nodosum, Agrostis stolonifera, and Agrostis canina. Future plant-breeding should have a good chance of opening up further possibilities here, as also with our main turf-grasses Agrostis tenuis, Poa pratensis and Festuca rubra."
