Abstract/Contents: | Stresses the importance of turf conditioning. Describes symptoms of turf compaction, including reduction in leaf growth, decreased density, decreased growth rate, and weed invasion. Suggests aeration methods to relieve soil compaction, such as using solid or hollow spike/tine aerators, and spiking and slicing. States that soil moisture levels should be taken into account during cultivation, which should be done at least twice per year. States that "cultivation practices are as important as fertilization, weed control or any other cultural practice. Develop a cultivation program that meets field needs and the budget, but remember that even the best-prepared plans must be modified at times. Know what options are available and be flexible enough to adjust the plan to meet changing conditions and turf needs." |
